lol the buzzing of flies is just sexy not annoying

I hate the things that flash on the screen when I am in the middle of "getting into" a story it completely breaks the atmosphere but at least in the UK the normal advert breaks are at reasonably long intervals.....I remember trying to watch Star Trek once when I was in the USA and instead of it taking 50 mins it went on for nearly 2 hours coz every 5 mins it kept stopping for commerical breaks, I have never seen so many in the middle of one programme! I decided then that if I lived in the USA I would not be able to watch anything as it went out but would need to watch it all from recorded data so I can fast forward through the adverts.

Inserts work on me, all right. They work very effectively to tick me the heck off at the TV stations. I watch less and less TV these days. Some of that is due to simple lack of intelligent programming, but those pesky insert ads are as annoying as the buzzing of flies.

“The Prisoner” with Patrick McGoohan used to totally lock up my mind to the point where I would be completely oblivious to being called to the dinner table. I cannot remember any of the commercials, (but if there were ones for beer, then they worked quite well).

You have focused, it seems, on the US education system, and while that is certainly guilty of everything you say it is, there have been far worse examples in recent history and far worse examples as we speak. The Nazis knew the harvest of enthusiasm that education could sow, as did Stalin and Mao. Today we see North Korea virtually brainwashing kids into believing that every single American is the devil and in Northern Pakistan the Taliban manipulates children to see virtue in acts of violent terrorism. Education of children *should* be a sacred obligation, but unfortunately it is often used as an evil tool to further the power of bone selfish and stark raving mad leaders.

It also seems that a lot of "old" chocolate bars keep on getting launched.....things from the early/mid 70s (my childhood) and when they come back on the market for a while they sell like wildfire. There also seems to be a fairly strong market for compilation DVDs of children’s TV from the early/mid 70s. I guess that the purchaser is hoping that by eating something they used to eat and love as a child, or watch something they used to love they are somehow going to re-live those "happier carefree" times and temporarily escape from the pressures they face in adulthood.

Personally, whenever I have eaten an "old" chocolate bar like that it never seems as big now as it did then (maybe they DID make it smaller now to save money or maybe my hands and mouth were just smaller then so everything seemed bigger...) or whenever I have watched an "old" DVD compilation I wonder WHY I was ever so enamoured by the programme :-)

I like what you said regarding the relationship between conscious awareness and the subconscious, especially about the patterns which bring certain things close to the surface, yet not necessarily to full consciousness.

Watching the process of thoughts coming and going can be almost overwhelming when one first begins to practice it, however, in time familiarity with the process can allow one to automatically recognize the various “parts” of the process as unimportant when compared to the whole process itself. Example: observing the thought arising of a sexy image, not focusing on the image itself, but instead focusing on the “mechanics” of where the image came from in the mind, where it resides now, and where it disappears to. As you said, making an obsession out of mindfulness is a type of conditioning, and as such it is a loop, a trap. Achieving the ability to automatically recognize the true nature of thought process is much like adding a third dimension of perspective to an otherwise two dimensional landscape.

I like Obama, but when I see ads like these on his behalf I actually feel aversion towards him building. Not much, but some. Perhaps my greatest aversion here is just to manipulative negative ads in general. I don’t care who is running the ads, I just plain don’t like them and usually feel like moving away from whatever it is the ad is trying to sell me.

Looks like you're missing the point about this commercial. This is in no way an attempt by Dove to cause anyone to be sexually aroused by the images of scantily clad women while looking at a little girl. If you did become aroused, you have a definite problem! We are assaulted from birth by images of what women are "supposed" to look like. Go to any department store and look at little girls' fashions and accessories and you will notice that kindergartners are encouraged to dress in hooker clothes and wear makeup. They are being conditioned to adhere to these unreal standards of how they should dress, act, behave and look. I applaud Dove for their campaign to raise awareness among women and girls about real beauty and self-esteem. Is it a marketing and PR tool and are they hoping to generate profits from this campaign? Of course they are! But I would rather support a company that encourages us to look deeper at our unrealistic standards of beauty and to feel comfortable in the skin we were blessed to be born with than to continue to buy into the Madison Avenue standards of beauty that encourage eating disorders, self mutilation through plastic surgery and the development of an inferiority complex because nobody can look like those airbrushed models in the ads. Learn to be more discerning in your analysis of ads and get past the images of scatily clad women that seem to appeal to your prurient nature.

I can't think of any similar commercials, but I just wanted to comment that I wasn't aroused by looking at the women. I was irritated. Being a woman who will never look like that, those kind of in-your-face images irritate me. But then again, I'm easily irritated.

I haven't bought any Dove products lately either. I'm not sure if there's a connection, hehehe.
